Back lights.

Gameboy's are a difficult tool to use in that they require just the right light to be able to see properly, too much and you get reflections, not enough and it becomes unreadable.

How to remedy this in a live situation where lighting is bizzare and at times nonexistant?

Backlighting of course.

I did these using backlight kits from chiptuner "nonfinite" (nonelectronics.com) who offers them as a DIY kit along with tutorial.

Normally the gameboy uses a reflective film behind a polarised film, to reflect light back out.
With these backlights, the reflective film is replaced by an LED and dispersion substrate, that spreads the light equally across the screen.
